Driving Abroad: What You Need to Know Before Hitting the Road in Europe

There’s something magical about exploring Europe by car. You can set your own pace, stop in charming villages, and uncover hidden gems along the way. On my recent driving adventure through France and Spain, I was reminded of just how rewarding (and occasionally confusing!) international driving can be.

1. Check if You Need an International Driving Permit (IDP)

Some countries, such as Spain, require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP). It’s a translation of your U.S. license and can be essential if you're pulled over or renting a car. You can easily obtain one through AAA for $20.

2. Understand Local Traffic Rules

Speed limits, road etiquette, and local laws can differ significantly from what you’re used to. For example, in Spain, you must carry a warning triangle in your car. Always check what’s required in the country you're visiting.

3. Know the Road Signs (They’re Not Always Intuitive)

European road signs are often pictorial and not in English. Brush up on key signs before you go, especially for things like “yield,” “no entry,” or “toll road ahead.” Not knowing could cost you a fine or at least a lot of confusion at a roundabout!

4. Rent Like a Pro

Book your rental car in advance and pay close attention to whether it’s automatic or manual (manual is more common in Europe). Be sure to check the company’s fuel and toll policies. Also, ensure that you have the proper insurance coverage.

Driving abroad isn’t difficult. It just takes a little preparation. With the right knowledge and a flexible spirit, you’ll be ready to make unforgettable memories behind the wheel. Thinking about planning your own European road trip? Let me design an itinerary that’s as smooth as the roads through the Basque Country.
